December 21st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Aquarium Ornaments

Your aquarium ornaments can become covered in brown or green algae over time. This situation will be harmful for any plants or fish living in your aquarium if the algae becomes too mucg. Also a dirty aquarium is always unpleasant and can leave your visitors thinking that you don’t take care of your fish. Cleaning your aquarium decorations is pretty easy and can be done right at your kitchen sink.

To avoid cleaning your aquarium ornaments to much make sure you change your aquarium water once each month. This will keep the decorations from building up algae at a faster rate. This is an important step to the overall health of your fish tank.

Instructions:
Remove the ornaments carefully, one at a time, so it doesn’t disturb the fish. Turn your faucet on hot water and place each aquarium ornament under for 10/15 seconds. This will rinse off the top layer of dirt and algae.
Then fill your sink with hot water and pour in 1/2 cup of bleach. Place your aquarium ornaments in the water/bleach mixture and allow to soak for 1 hour. To scrub the dirt and algae left you can use a toothbrush.
Run each ornament under hot water one more time for about 1 minute. Return the ornaments to your aquarium one at a time, being careful not to disturb the fish.

To choose a good Aquarium you have to look at the glass quality. Your Aquarium needs a glass of high quality and sufficient thickness. There are aquarium trade guidelines that say aquariums designed to have a water depth bigger than 44cm/17″ should be constructed of at least 6mm thick glass.

Aquariums greater than 90cm/36″  in length should be made of 6mm glass if the aquarium exceeds 38cm/15″ in height, and of 10mm glass if water depth exceeds 45cm/18″ depth.

Silicone joints have to be neat and tidy. Edges and joins should not have any damages.

If you want to use bracing bars on your aquarium you need to think how they will affect your aquaria.

If using an older-style “wooden” hood or canopy, does the aquarium have a condensation cover and does this fit well while still allowing easy access to the water?
